Continuity of care with midwives

Our continuity of care model:

Kindred offers a range of care options, so it is important you know which option is best suited to you. There is comprehensive information below about these options.

Nichy, Bela and Kaitlin (pictured) offer continuity of care in a caseload model, meaning that alongside your Kindred obstetrician, you have a midwife providing care during your pregnancy, labour and birth and postpartum. Not all families at Kindred have this model of care and places within this model are limited.

Other families might choose to have care with a Kindred midwife during pregnancy and after birth, but not have that midwife on call for their birth. At Kindred this is known as shared care, and still has fantastic benefits for families. This is what we offer when places within our continuity model are full, and this care can be provided with any of the broader midwifery team. Some families prefer support from the midwives on an ‘as needed’ basis, which might include 1-2 appointments during pregnancy and 1-2 check ins after birth.

The whole principle of Kindred is that you can build you care based on what is important to you and your family.

Expressions of interest in our midwifery continuity model are considered on a case by case basis and it is important that you let us know as soon as possible if you wish to be considered. If you have had care with the Kindred midwives before, please note this when expressing your interest. This caseload model is different to our previous team based model (change occurring 2022-23), and we trust you will find the changes we have made as positive for you as they have been for our team.

Our admin team have comprehensive information available about this model, and our other models of midwifery care, if you would like to know more.

Kindred midwifery provides comprehensive and uniquely tailored care to each family.

Midwifery

Our midwives are here to journey with you. Our services have recently undergone some changes, to allow families to be more comprehensively supported and enable families to choose care that is relevant to their needs.

There are proven benefits of continuity of care providers during all stages of the journey to parenthood, and we look forward to offering you care that suits your needs. Midwifery continuity models are not are not a new concept, but how Kindred delivers care, and the core philosophy behind our model, is progressive, responsive and relative to the needs of each individual family.

As a team, our midwives and obstetricians will provide continuity to families together. This may include:

1. Education appointments with a midwife in addition to your obstetric appointments, and comprehensive postnatal care with our midwifery team.

2. Shared care between a midwife and your obstetrician, where you can get to know a midwife during pregnancy and this same midwife continues to support your family at home after birth.

3. Midwifery continuity, where alongside your obstetrician, a midwife from Kindred provides care during pregnancy, labour, birth and your first weeks at home. Places in this continuity program are limited and we encourage you to express your interest as early as possible, although allocation of places in the program aren’t formalised until after your first appointment with our team.

These models are based upon supportive collaboration between midwives and obstetricians with a focus on continuity of care and providing bespoke services that are unrivalled in quality. This approach allows women and families to enjoy clinical care that is relevant to them, while feeling supported by a team of like-minded midwives and obstetricians.

As part of the Kindred family, ALL FAMILIES will have access to the following services:

  • phone support from a midwife from first appointment, through to six weeks after birth for general questions or concerns
  • regular appointments with our team, ranging from routine check-ups to long appointments for education and planning with a known midwife
  • email access for direct but non-urgent questions
  • education classes
  • ward visits while in hospital after birth
  • comprehensive in-home postnatal visits with a known midwife
  • ongoing support into parenthood with breastfeeding clinics, self-service baby weigh facilities, allocation to online group support and in-person parents’ groups.

Kindred midwives work as private clinicians and therefore all care during pregnancy and the postnatal period attracts a Medicare rebate.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the first time, private midwifery and obstetrics have been brought together to allow complete continuity with a team who support you in your preferences and unique journey.

In other models, accessing midwifery care means that if you need input from an obstetrician, it may be someone you have never met before and doesn’t understand your story, journey and preferences.

Similarly, in other practices, obstetric patients may not meet a midwife until the day of labour, and or have input from a number of different midwives, which can be difficult. If you chose to have care with one of the doctors at Kindred for your pregnancy journey, Kindred midwives will see you during your pregnancy for education and support, then for six weeks of in-home midwifery visits.

Kindred has been established as a ‘best of both worlds’ approach, to allow families care that is specifically important to them.

Kindred’s unique practice model means you can choose to have complete care with midwives and obstetricians who recognise that not all families need or want the same thing. Therefore we have designed Kindred with an understanding that care is better delivered in collaboration, rather than isolation. For the first time, Kindred has brought private midwifery and obstetric care together to allow access to and continuity from known care providers throughout your entire journey.

Continuity in care providers has been identified as the most influential factor in both optimal clinical outcomes and positive experiences in maternity care.

Continuity  means unbroken and consistent care from a known person/s. It promotes autonomy, self-efficacy, and increased satisfaction through enabling informed decision making.

Working collaboratively in maternity care is paramount. Midwives and obstetricians have skills and knowledge which compliment each other, and when used with like-mindedness to support women and families in their unique journey, optimal outcomes are achieved, both in terms of clinical outcomes and positive experiences.

Kindred is the only practice where continuity and collaboration between midwives and obstetricians is at the core of practice philosophy and is provided throughout the entire journey – from early pregnancy, throughout labour and birth, and for six weeks after birth.
