Counselling Service promoting mental health, emotional well-being and adjustment throughout motherhood.

Counselling

Becoming a mother can be one of the biggest challenges we face in life and we often need that extra little support. Many mums struggle with fertility loss, miscarriage, traumatic births, breastfeeding that didn’t work out, loss of identity and changes in your relationship with your partner, difficulties managing your toddler’s behaviours, especially if you have a new born.

Karen O’Mara has over 25 years experience working with families, and understands the issues that often face new mothers in their adjustment to motherhood.  Karen help mums through the adjustment to matresence, but also in the area of parenting support for toddlers and older children.

As a qualified clinical social worker Karen helps mums through;

  • providing you with a safe space where you can feel heard and have your feelings validated

  • normalising your experience of motherhood to help you feel less alone

  • supporting you to talk through your feelings and experiences that have left you feeling sad, depressed, anxious, angry etc

  • connecting you with other mums so you can build your village of support

  • providing you with evidence-based information so you can make informed decisions about your mothering

Home visits are charged at $140 (plus $30 travel fee if outside Brisbane City Council). Rebate information can be found on ‘our fees’ page.

Home visits are available beyond six weeks, however do not attract any medicare rebates.

Home visits can be purchased as a package and gift vouchers are available. Please contact us for more information.

Enabling families to make informed decisions and feel supported

Education

At Kindred, we are passionate about the journey.

For us, it’s not enough just to provide clinical care during pregnancy – we want to prepare people to be parents. We want to facilitate the transition, and admire the change.

Education and support is an invaluable part of the journey, and we have specifically designed our education sessions to be small in size, casual, discussion based and interactive.

Our education sessions are available in person and online. In person sessions are either in small groups (subject to availability) or one-on-one with a midwife. Our online course can be accessed by anyone, at any time during pregnancy.

Option 1: Antenatal class group session: Weekend sessions run on the second Saturday of the month from 1pm-5.30pm with afternoon tea provided, and the cost is $300 per couple. (Max 6 couples per group). Bookings can be made via our admin team. These often book out approximately 4 months in advance.

Option 2: online course and one-on-one session with midwife. This includes the online version of our group class. It is pre-recorded and sent with powerpoint presentation, so you can listen to them in the comfort of your own home at a time that suits you. Following listening to the online class, you will be booked in for a 90min consultation with one our midwives to go through questions, tailor what you need to know about your own personal situation and preference, and learn some hands on skills for taking your baby home. This option costs $150 and bookings can be made via our admin team.

Our classes also includes a video tour of Mater Mothers Private Hospital. If you would like to access a video tour only, please ask our admin team.

Education Modules:

Labour & Birth.
We are keen to build your understanding of the physical changes that occur during labour and birth, the impact of hormones and enable you to feel comfortable and confident with the process. We don’t sit on mats and hum, we don’t practice breathing techniques – we talk through the process, we remove the fear; we simply explain.

Fourth Trimester.
No, we aren’t going to make your pregnancy longer. Yes, fourth trimester is a valid period during your transition to parenthood and in actual fact, the most important one to feel educated and supported during. This includes information on what to expect as you get used to being parents, while you baby gets used to being in the world. We teach practical skills such as feeding, nappy changes, bathing, settling, safe sleeping during this session.

Making Informed Decisions.
We are strong believers in ensuring you feel comfortable to make decisions about your journey to becoming parents, that you feel are best for you. It’s not up to us to decide these things, but rather our job to give you all the information and support you in your preferences. This class focuses on options such as medicated pain relief, induction of labour, cesarean sections, and all situations where we want you to be able to make informed decisions.

Because having a newborn is unpredictable

Drop-in and weigh your babe

Having booked appointment times and a newborn is not always an ideal combination.

We know that life with a newborn brings days that are smooth, and others that are not so, and while it is important that you have check ups, it is more important that you have them at times that suit your unpredictable world.

Kindred has self-weigh and drop-in clinics where no appointment is needed and if you can’t make it that day, just drop in when you can.

These clinics are free of charge and involve:

  • baby weigh facilitates
  • tea station
  • ability to chat to a midwife and book full a consultation if needed.
